Treating Psoriasis

Psoriasis

Psoriasis, similar to eczema, is a chronic skin disease that causes flaky, itchy skin and has no cure. Dr Maphosa's approach to treatment is to understand the type of psoriasis, what triggers it and how to manage the symptoms.

What are the symptoms of psoriasis?

The symptoms of psoriasis vary based on the type you have, but you can typically diagnose the condition by looking out for the following signs:

  • Rashes that vary in colour, size and texture
  • Scaly spots
  • Dry, cracked skin
  • Itchiness
  • Skin pain

It's essential to avoid picking your skin, no matter how itchy. The skin is sensitive, and if broken open, it could lead to an infection and worsen your symptoms.

What causes psoriasis?

The cause of psoriasis is still largely unknown, but it typically occurs due to an immune system malfunction that destroys healthy cells, leading to inflammation and swelling. This manifests on the skin's surface as plaques or rashes, which can be exacerbated by triggers. Genetics and environmental factors can also play a role.

If you are living with psoriasis, you will most likely experience flare-ups caused by triggers. These differ for each individual, but the most common culprits are:

  • Injuries to the skin, such as cuts or surgery
  • Skin infections
  • Weather changes
  • Specific medications
  • Heavy alcohol consumption

Fortunately, psoriasis is not contagious, and various medications and treatments are available to help manage symptoms.

Types of psoriasis

Understanding the type of psoriasis you have is key to determining the symptoms and best ways to manage your conditions. Fortunately, Dr Maphosa is skilled in diagnosing and treating various forms of psoriasis.

The various forms of psoriasis include:

  • Plaque psoriasis: This is the most common form of the condition and causes dry, itchy and scaly patches on the scalp, lower back, elbows and knees.
  • Inverse psoriasis: This is characterised by areas of inflamed skin affecting parts of the body with folds, such as the breasts, buttocks and groin.
  • Pustular psoriasis: This rare condition causes widespread blisters filled with pus that manifest in areas of the body or concentrated areas of the soles or palms.
  • Guttate psoriasis: This is usually caused by an infection like strep throat and occurs in children and young adults.
  • Nail psoriasis: This form of psoriasis affects the fingernails and toenails, leading to discolouration and abnormal nail growth. In severe cases, the nails loosen or disintegrate.
  • Erythrodermic psoriasis: As the least common type of psoriasis, this condition leads to a peeling rash covering the entire body.
